We have learned about creatures that live in the different layers of the ocean and about ships that float on the ocean. Today we are going to explore something very interesting about water - surface tension.
Watch the video below to learn about surface tension - a kind of invisible skin on the water
Surface tension is created as the molecules of water at the surface pull tightly together.
Watch the videos below for some cool ways to play with and investigate surface tension and then have a go at some of the experiments yourself...
To repeat any of the experiments below you may need:
LET'S INVESTIGATE - MAKE A POWERED BOAT
You will need:
What to do:
3. Place a blob of washing up liquid on the bottom of your boat at the end of the slot
4. Place your boat gently, soap side down, on the surface of the water at one end of your tray and watch.....
Why does this work?
The soap breaks the surface tension and this causes the boat to slide forward across the surface.
USE SURFACE TENSION TO WIN A BET
You will need:
What to do:
Challenge someone to float the object in the middle of one of the glasses without it moving over and touching the side of the glass (they won't be able to do it - try it yourself!)
How to win the bet:
Surface tension is your friend. Use the second glass to fill the first glass right to the very very top so that it is just about to overflow (if you look at it from the side the water will look like it is bulging up with a curved surface - surface tension). Now gently place the object in the centre of the full glass - the surface tension will hold it still!!! You win the challenge
