► DEAR DIARY
Before you begin any writing today I would like to suggest that you listen to this book. It is a book all about what is happening right now. It is written for children your age.

Another week's holiday has passed and we begin a new phase with rules about meeting people changing.

School has opened for some year groups but not others.

  • What have you been up to this last week or two?
  • What have you been really enjoying?
  • What is now changing for your family?
  • How are you going to do things differently in the coming week or two?
  • What are your thoughts on this whole Coronavirus episode?

In your exercise book write a Dear Diary entry dated 1st June 2020.

So, what would you like to learn about?

Today we will learn about plants...

We know that the world is full of living things.

We know that there are plants and animals.

We know that plants and animals are connected in food chains.

We know that all food chains begin with plants.

Plants are producers - they make their own food.

Animals are consumers - they eat plants or other animals.

Let's find out more about plants - are they just as fascinating as animals?

All today's science and art requires patience...I will look forward to your pictures in a few days!

Question 1

Do you know the parts of a plant?

Watch below...

Question 2

Do you know what plants need to survive?

Watch the short film below...

LET'S DO THIS ACTIVITY 1!

Let's grow a plant.

You will need:

  • a carrot
  • a saucer/plate
  • water

What to do

  1. (Ask an adult to supervise) Cut the top off the carrot
  2. Place the carrot top in the saucer
  3. Add some water to the saucer (we know plants need water)
  4. Place it somewhere light (we know plants need light to grow)
  5. Take a photo
  6. Keep topping the water up each day if it evaporates
  7. Take a photo each day - up to 10 days

Watch this film to see how it might work...

The carrot (orange part) is the root of the plant and takes up the water to help the stem, shoots and leaves grow.

LETS DO THIS ACTIVITY 2!

Watch this investigation first...

It would be fun to try and recreate this experiment

You will need

  • some sticks of celery with leaves on
  • some food colouring (red or blue are good)
  • a tall glass or mug to stand the celery in
  • water
  • a spoon

What to do

  1. Fill about half your glass with water
  2. Add 5 or more drops of food colouring to the water - nice and dark colour
  3. Ask a grown-up to cut the end off the celery (not the leaf end)
  4. Now stand the celery in the coloured water
  5. Take a photo
  6. Take a photo a day or so later

Watch the film below to see what happens and learn why it happens...

LET'S DO THIS ACTIVITY 3!

Let's get artistic!

You will need:

  • a small flower or plant from your garden or a walk
  • some newspaper
  • some books

Watch this video to see what to do...
